The Oberlin College Library invites applications for the position of East Asian Studies Librarian. This is a full-time, 12-month Administrative and Professional staff position reporting to the Collection Development Librarian.
Under the supervision of the Collection Development Librarian, the incumbent is responsible for: 1) selection, acquisition, and bibliographic control of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language collections; 2) liaison and instruction activities with faculty and students in East Asian Studies; 3) active involvement as part of the Library’s web development and digital initiatives teams.

Required Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution. Written and spoken fluency in Chinese and/or Japanese. Familiarity of Romanization rules, such as Pinyin, Wade-Giles, and/or Hepburn. Knowledge of bibliographic databases, metadata standards, and reference tools, including AACR2, RDA, LCRI, LC-PCC PSs,LCSH, LC Classification Schedules, PCC & CONSER cataloging guidelines, andMARC formats. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; demonstrated ability to work well in a team; demonstrated ability to work with web development tools in a library environment.
Desired Qualifications: Written and spoken fluency in Korean. Ordering and/or cataloging experience using OCLC-Connexion and local library systems. Experience with East Asian book and serials trade. Solo librarian and archivist for collection of about 3000 books and periodicals and a large and growing archive of bookbinding and book trade ephemera (photographs, 18th – 20th century bookbinding ephemera, binders’ tickets, bookbinding material samples, machinery manuals, more). The collections are mostly uncataloged; the majority is English language material, with some French, German, Russian, other languages. Current operations involve MARC21 cataloging and copy cataloging with OCLC Connexion Client and Koha, and processing collections in our archive using ArchivesSpace.
Librarian will manage reading room for researchers and visitors using the non-circulating collection. Other responsibilities: contributing content to museum blog/newsletter highlighting items from collections and leading some tours and talks. Should feel comfortable talking with visitors about work on various projects as part of the archives processing will be downstairs on the visitors floor.  Librarian will work with Associate Director on projects related to exhibitions and digitization of collection.
Experience desired:
  • MLIS (at least 2 years experience cataloging in a library)
  • MARC21 cataloging
  • Original and copy cataloging experience using OCLC Connexion and Koha: monographs, serials.
  • Familiarity with archival standards and best practices, EAD, DACS.
  • Archive to be cataloged using ArchivesSpace with regular updates to Online Archives of California (OAC)

Creates digital collections including metadata for applications such as photographic collections, archives, manuscripts music and video; develops guidelines for access and use.  Supervises the training of staff and students in imaging technology using ContentDM, DSpace, image editing software and digitization hardware; should be familiar with metadata standards.

The Digital Resources Librarian participates in reference rotation, assumes collection development responsibilities for assigned subject areas, and is involved with library teams and other professional/scholarly activities in keeping with university faculty guidelines.
Requires a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution. Experience with creation and/or management of digital objects in various formats, and digital image technologies. Desired: knowledge of DSpace and two years of academic library experience.
Minimum salary of $48,000, dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Libraries and archives around the world are applying the principles of library and archival sciences to address challenges and provide new services related to research data management. Librarians are helping researchers address needs throughout the research data lifecycle, for example, by conducting assessment and outreach, consulting on data management plans and metadata, incorporating data into information literacy instruction and collection management, and providing data publication and preservation services.
IFLA Journal invites papers for a special issue focused on research data services and libraries across all continents. The issue will be published in October 2016 as Volume 42:3. In particular, the main goal of the special issue is to gather the latest theory, research, and state-of-the-art practices from libraries that are informing and innovating effective data services.
