Balliol College is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, self-motivated professional librarian to join the team responsible for maintaining the intellectual hub of the College – its Library.
Balliol College is one of the largest and longest established colleges in the University of Oxford. It exists to advance education at both undergraduate and graduate levels, to facilitate and to encourage scholarship and research at the very highest levels, and to promote excellence in learning.
The Library supports the College’s aims by delivering 24-hour access to the resources and working environment to support undergraduate and postgraduate study and collecting, preserving and promoting the College’s intellectual heritage, at Balliol’s two library sites and online.

The Assistant Librarian plays a pivotal role in Balliol’s library service, deputising for the Librarian in all areas of the Library’s running and leading in collections development and reader services. 
Collection development: Lead on new stock selection, acquisition and assessment of stock for disposal. Help process new stock and maintain the condition of existing stock.
Cataloguing: on the ALEPH system using AACR2 and RDA.
Circulation: Manage circulation, including operation of the Aleph circulation module and D-Tech self-service borrowing system. Support the Early Career Librarian in administering overdue reports and charges, monitoring the security system, stock reshelving and tidying.
Reader services: Work with colleagues to organise reader inductions and information literacy training, and maintain the Library’s current awareness service through signage, the Library website, Facebook and other media as appropriate; ensure that Library rules are observed and the reading room facilities function smoothly; contribute to staffing the enquiry desk and answering remote enquiries.
The Assistant Librarian will also: 
Deputise for the Librarian in all areas of Library management including budget, buildings and staff management.
Be involved in the curation of Balliol’s historic collections of early-printed books, manuscripts and personal papers including cataloguing, reader enquiries and invigilation, collections promotion, exhibitions and events.
Contribute ideas to improve the Library service.
Attend professional meetings and training.
Take on any other duties as agreed with the Librarian.
Essential
  • A good first degree, and a postgraduate diploma or Masters in Library and Information studies, or significant experience in a similar library environment
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work well in a small team
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • High level of information and computer literacy, including proficiency with catalogues, library management systems, word processing, email and spreadsheets
  • Ability to solve problems and take a creative approach to work
Desirable
  • Experience of working in an academic library
  • Experience of any of the principal responsibilities of the post

As part of the ongoing modernisation of the Libraries and Heritage service, we are looking for an experienced and creative person to establish and develop our digital presence. You will be an excellent communicator, able to develop new and innovative content and a positive profile on social media. Our key aim is to bring our services and unique collections to the widest possible audience including Southwark’s own very diverse community.
  • You will be responsible for all stages of designing, writing and publishing content using all digital channels.
  • You will have an in depth knowledge of current best practice and emerging trends including the role of digital services in local government.
  • You will develop access to our heritage collections using museum and archive collection management systems and industry standard applications.
  • You will work with partner organisations to coordinate online information for Libraries and Heritage to promote specific events that showcase our collections.
  • You will be highly proficient in the use of IT with experience of working in digital media and in designing and creating content on the web.
  • You will have managed complex projects and have delivered them on time and within an agreed budget.

Job description


We are looking for two enthusiastic and well organised individuals to work in our Collections Services team.  
These posts will report directly to the Content Manager, and provide support for the management of the Library's e-resources. Both posts will investigate e-resource access queries from students and staff, and each post will have a specific responsibility. One will compile usage statistics for the Library's electronic resources, including e-journals, e-books and databases, and will gather data in order to inform collection management decisions.  The other will support the maintenance of the Library's e-book subscription packages in order to provide access to current content, as well as organising the day to day running of any e-book projects and providing metadata support.
Both posts will also undertake other general Library duties as well as support in a liaison team.


You will have:
-        Excellent organisational skills
-        Strong oral and written communication skills
-        A good general education to GCSE standard or equivalent, including English and Maths
-        Knowledge of electronic resources
-        Experience of library work
-        A high level of attention to detail and accuracy
