The library building in Mob Quadrangle, dating from 1373 is the oldest continuously functioning library for university academics and students in the world.
Merton College invites applications for the post of Library Assistant, within the College Library. This post provides support to the Assistant Librarian, Fellow Librarian and Archivist in their provision of reader services, collection management (including special collections), and administration.
The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as organisational skills and the ability to prioritise a diverse workload. The ability to follow procedures and guidelines and produce accurate work is essential.

Job Summary
To assist in the provision of an efficient and effective service by greeting and registering users, providing basic information about the service, enabling access to designated physical and online materials, collecting materials from stores, and referring queries to senior staff members as required.
Key Tasks
To undertake invigilation duties and to co-operate with other staff in the provision of an efficient, effective and friendly service to users at all times.
To respond to basic enquiries at the desk and via telephone.
To collect and retrieve materials from stores as requested.
To collect basic statistical information about service use.
To record promptly and accurately the issue and return of materials.
To be familiar with membership rules (e.g., use of materials, photography, access, etc.).
To assist and source materials for disabled users as needed.
To assist with monitoring of the physical environment, ensuring that desks are cleared and maintenance issues referred to the Estates team.
Undertake any other reasonable duties as Archivists or the Assistant Director
Essential:
Good general education or equivalent experience.
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Excellent numeracy skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to work in an accurate and methodical fashion, to agreed standards and timescales.
A knowledge, understanding and competence in ICT, including use of standard office
software and equipment and ability to use web-based tools.
Desirable:
Experience of working in a Library or Archives.

Job description


We are looking for two enthusiastic and well organised individuals to work in our Collections Services team.  
These posts will report directly to the Content Manager, and provide support for the management of the Library's e-resources. Both posts will investigate e-resource access queries from students and staff, and each post will have a specific responsibility. One will compile usage statistics for the Library's electronic resources, including e-journals, e-books and databases, and will gather data in order to inform collection management decisions.  The other will support the maintenance of the Library's e-book subscription packages in order to provide access to current content, as well as organising the day to day running of any e-book projects and providing metadata support.
Both posts will also undertake other general Library duties as well as support in a liaison team.


You will have:
-        Excellent organisational skills
-        Strong oral and written communication skills
-        A good general education to GCSE standard or equivalent, including English and Maths
-        Knowledge of electronic resources
-        Experience of library work
-        A high level of attention to detail and accuracy
