Solo librarian and archivist for collection of about 3000 books and periodicals and a large and growing archive of bookbinding and book trade ephemera (photographs, 18th – 20th century bookbinding ephemera, binders’ tickets, bookbinding material samples, machinery manuals, more). Position Focus: The Yale University Library (YUL) is seeking a Digital Accessioning Archivist for Yale Special Collections to fill a two-year position. Under the supervision of the Digital Archivist in the Manuscript Unit of the Beinecke Library, and in collaboration with the Born Digital Working Group, the position will help establish a centralized born-digital accessioning service for special collections units in Yale’s libraries and museums.

This position will contribute to the development of best practices and workflows for accessioning born-digital material, undertake the hands-on work of disk imaging, train and supervise the work of student assistants and other staff, and make recommendations related to post-term digital accessioning sustainability. In addition to helping YUL achieve its goal of eliminating current backlogs of digital media in units across Yale’s special collections community, this position will play an integral role in developing and implementing scalable workflows for incoming acquisitions of born-digital material. This will involve managing media received from different units across campus, conducting quality assurance on both processes and products, and preparing files for ingest into the Library’s digital preservation system. This position is a unique opportunity to collaborate with a team to help build a born-digital accessioning program from the ground up, while also gaining extensive hands-on experience with disk imaging and forensic tools. Also completes special projects as assigned. Participates in Library-wide planning and committee work as appropriate, and is expected to be active professionally.

The Beinecke’s Manuscript Unit, which is a division of Technical Services, supports the Beinecke's robust acquisition program and is responsible for the accessioning, processing, and cataloging of its manuscript collections, including born-digital materials. The Born Digital Working Group consists of staff from Beinecke Library, Manuscripts and Archives, the Yale Center for British Art, and YUL’s Preservation department, and is leading Yale’s efforts to enable all special collections in its libraries and museums to acquire, ingest, preserve, and provide access to born-digital archival materials with the same level of stewardship and care as is devoted to Yale’s physical collections.
Essential Duties 1. Assume a variety of responsibilities related to manuscript and archival material in all formats, including selection, appraisal, arrangement and description, preservation, and access and outreach. 2. Work in libraries across university campuses to meet the needs of local, national, and international teaching and research communities. 3. General Description: Acquires, accessions, processes, and maintains archives of health professionals and biomedical researchers, primarily those with a connection to Cincinnati and the region.  Partners with scholars and other Center visitors to conduct accurate and innovative research and pedagogy.  Leads the Center’s exhibits program, oral history program, web site content development, and public programming initiatives.  Partners with a team of digital specialists to develop born-digital collections and digitization of high-value analog collections. Teaches classes and develops courses in medical/health history, establishes scholarly partnerships worldwide, and partners with regional community groups, schools, and cultural heritage organizations to integrate the Center into scholarly and outreach efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Cultivates potential donors of archives and acquires those archives, including negotiating instruments of gift and collaborating with the director of development to acquire resources for adding such collections, as needed.
  2. Accessions, processes, describes, and preserves the Center’s archive collections, including creating finding aids in EAD and bibliographic records in MARC (or RDA).
  3. As a research and teaching partner, provides reference and research services for scholars and teachers using the Center’s collections to produce innovative research and instruction.
  4. Maintains the Center’s non-public records, inventories, and digital assets, and determines the content, format, and timing for publicizing such resources.
  5. Leads the Center’s exhibits program, with subject and preservation experts, including on-site exhibit spaces, University exhibit spaces, traveling exhibits, and community exhibits.  
  6. Organizes and coordinates the Center’s oral history program of video and audio recordings of regional medical/health practitioners and researchers of exceptional accomplishment.
  7. Plans and leads public programming initiatives, including the annual Cecil Striker Lecture.  
  8. Maintains content on the Center’s website, and collaborates in the development of functionality shared by other UC Libraries’ websites, using standards-compliant markup, web technologies, and best practices in accordance with UC website policies and hardware/software standards and practices.
  9. Partners with UCL’s Digital Collections and Repositories, Preservation Lab, other special collections, and other experts to digitize the Center’s high-value analog collections and to most effectively organize and build digital collections of born-digital objects.
  10. Engages in creative outreach activities that demonstrate the Center’s value and contribute to scholarship or teaching, such as, teaching classes and developing courses in medical/health history; establishing scholarly partnerships worldwide; and partnering with regional community groups, schools, and cultural heritage organizations to integrate the Center into scholarly and outreach efforts.
  11. Develops, manages, selects, and purchases medical history reference resources, rare books, and historical medical artifacts that align with Center’s collection priorities and support teaching and research needs.
  12. Provides oral and written reports as directed.
  13. Participates in appropriate committees and organizations related to the duties and    responsibilities of the department, and in support of UC Libraries programs and organizations.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or a graduate degree in a related field.

  4. Experience developing and maintaining web site content.

Assists patrons with account activity and fines. May be required to handle cash transactions. May use automated material handler for automated sorting of library materials.
• Material placement. May perform a variety of material placement processes including sorting and shelving library materials. May retrieve materials from library book drop.
• Other duties. Performs other duties as assigned or required.


Minimum Qualifications:
• Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree and one year related job experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates background and knowledge in performing primary responsibilities will be considered.
• Enthusiasm to work with the public and a solid foundation in good customer service skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills, ability to work with teams, and the ability to motivate and negotiate with diverse individuals and groups
• Intermediate knowledge of operating a computer and programs
• Ability to work days, nights or weekends as scheduled.
&bull If travel is required for library purposes must have transportation. If using personal vehicle, must maintain state required insurance.


Preferred Qualifications:
• Spanish language and/or other non­English language skills.
• Experience with library operations, programs and services.
• Experience working with children’s programming and library materials.


Working Environment:
• Work is performed in a library environment.
• Subject to repetitive movement; standing, walking, bending, reaching and lifting of objects. May be subject to standing or sitting for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to lift/carry library materials, up to 50 lbs, and push/pull library carts.
• Must have good hand mobility and coordination.
• Considerable exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.
• Subject to intermittent periods of inclement weather when retrieving library materials or participating in library outreach programs.


Schedule:
• Part-time 18 hours per week. Evenings and weekends will be required.
